Personality
Features
The Foldex is a medium-sized, compact, and well-rounded cat. Their most charming features are the small, folded ears from the Scottish Fold parent combined with the round, flat face and large, round eyes from the Exotic Shorthair parent. The head is distinctly round with full cheeks and a short, broad nose. Eyes are large, round, and widely spaced, coming in colors appropriate to the coat. The body is cobby, muscular, and low on the legs with a broad chest. The coat is short to medium, dense, and plush with a rich, soft texture. The tail is medium length, proportionate, and flexible. Not all kittens will have folded ears — straight-eared Foldex are also produced.
History
The Foldex was created in the 1990s in Quebec, Canada, by breeder Betty-Ann Yaxley, who crossed a Scottish Fold with an Exotic Shorthair. The goal was to combine the Scottish Fold's charming folded ears with the Exotic's round face and plush coat. The Canadian Cat Association (CCA) recognized the Foldex as an experimental breed in 2006 and later granted full recognition. As with all fold-eared breeds, responsible breeders never cross two fold-eared cats together, using straight-eared Scottish Folds or Exotic Shorthairs as outcrosses. The breed remains primarily found in Canada, though interest is growing internationally.
Health Notes
Fold-eared Foldex cats carry the risk of osteochondrodysplasia, the cartilage and bone condition associated with the fold gene. Never breed two fold-eared cats together. From the Exotic Shorthair side, PKD should be screened via DNA testing. The short nose may cause mild brachycephalic breathing issues in some individuals. Regular joint assessment is important for fold-eared individuals. Annual cardiac screening and dental checkups are recommended. Straight-eared Foldex generally have fewer health concerns. Work with a breeder who screens for genetic conditions. The breed typically lives 12 to 15 years with proper care.
Care Tips
Brush the dense, plush coat two to three times per week to prevent matting and remove loose hair. Clean the folded ears weekly, checking for wax buildup and moisture that could lead to infections — handle the ear cartilage gently. Monitor for signs of joint stiffness or discomfort, particularly in fold-eared individuals. Feed a balanced, portion-controlled diet to prevent obesity, which puts extra strain on joints. Provide moderate exercise through gentle play sessions. Keep the facial area clean, wiping tear stains if present. Regular dental care is important. Their easygoing nature makes grooming sessions pleasant.
