Neva Masquerade

Neva Masquerades share the Siberian's warm, affectionate temperament. They are gentle, patient cats that are excellent with children and other pets. They are playful and athletic, enjoying climbing, jumping, and interactive games. They form strong bonds with their families and are sociable without being clingy. They have a melodic, trilling voice and enjoy conversing with their owners. Intelligent and curious, they love exploring their environment and solving puzzle toys. They are confident and adaptable, handling new situations with composed curiosity. Their easygoing nature makes them excellent multi-pet household companions.

The Neva Masquerade has the same powerful, substantial body as the standard Siberian — medium to large, with a barrel-shaped torso, strong legs, and large, round paws with toe tufts. What distinguishes them is the colorpoint pattern: a lighter body with darker coloring on the face (mask), ears, legs, and tail, paired with vivid blue eyes. The coat is long, dense, and triple-layered with a waterproof topcoat, moderately long guard hairs, and a dense undercoat. A prominent ruff frames the face. The head is a modified wedge with rounded contours, and the ears are medium-large with lynx tipping. The full coat and majestic appearance take up to five years to fully develop.

The Neva Masquerade is the colorpoint variety of the Siberian, with the pointed pattern likely introduced through natural mixing with Siamese or Balinese cats in Russia. The variety was first specifically bred in Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) in the 1980s, with breeders selecting for the colorpoint pattern within Siberian lines. The name refers to the Neva River flowing through Saint Petersburg and the "masquerade" of the dark facial mask. Some Siberian breed purists consider the colorpoint variety a separate breed, while others include them within the Siberian standard. Most major registries accept them as a color variety of the Siberian.

Neva Masquerades share the health profile of the Siberian cat. HCM is the primary cardiac concern, and annual echocardiograms are recommended, especially for breeding cats. PKD can be screened via DNA testing. Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef) is a hereditary enzyme deficiency that can cause anemia. Reputable breeders screen for all these conditions. The breed's triple-layered coat means hairball prevention is important. Like all Siberians, they reportedly produce less Fel d 1 protein, potentially making them more suitable for allergy sufferers, though individual results vary. Lifespan is typically 12 to 18 years.

The luxurious triple coat requires regular grooming — brush two to three times per week, increasing to daily during the heavy spring and autumn shedding seasons. Use a wide-toothed comb to reach the dense undercoat. Provide a hairball prevention diet or supplement. Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet to maintain their substantial muscle mass. Provide tall, sturdy cat trees for climbing and daily interactive play sessions. Their water-resistant coat means they may enjoy water play. Large litter boxes accommodate their size.
