Personality
Features
The York Chocolate is a medium to large, well-muscled cat with a long, graceful body. The head is a rounded wedge shape with a moderately long nose and medium-sized, slightly pointed ears with furnishings. Eyes are medium-large, oval, and range from gold to green, with hazel also accepted. The semi-long coat is soft, silky, and flowing, with a moderate undercoat that does not mat easily. A slight ruff around the neck and feathering on the tail and britches add to their elegance. The tail is long and plumed. The overall appearance is of a refined, well-proportioned cat with a gorgeous chocolate or lavender coat.
History
The York Chocolate was developed in 1983 on a farm in New York State by Janet Chiefari. A long-haired black and white farm cat named Blacky mated with a long-haired black male, producing a chocolate brown female kitten named Brownie. When Brownie later mated, she produced chocolate and lavender kittens. Chiefari recognized the potential and began a selective breeding program. She named the breed after New York State and the chocolate coat color. CFF recognized the breed, and it was also shown in WCF events. However, the breed has always been extremely rare, and with few active breeders, the York Chocolate is now critically endangered. Finding one may require extensive searching.
Health Notes
York Chocolates are generally healthy cats with no widely documented breed-specific genetic conditions. Their farm-cat heritage contributes to a robust constitution. As with all cats, regular dental care, weight management, and annual veterinary checkups are recommended. Their semi-long coat means hairball prevention through regular grooming and diet management is important. As an extremely rare breed with a limited gene pool, potential inbreeding-related issues could be a concern — responsible breeders should prioritize genetic diversity. They typically live 13 to 15 years with proper care.
Care Tips
Brush the silky coat two to three times per week to prevent tangles and reduce hairballs. The coat is relatively low-maintenance for a semi-longhaired breed, as it does not mat as easily as denser-coated breeds. Feed a balanced, high-quality diet with measured portions to prevent weight gain. Provide daily interactive play and comfortable resting spots. They enjoy warm, cozy environments and will seek out sunny windowsills and soft beds. Regular dental care and annual veterinary visits keep them healthy. Their gentle nature makes grooming sessions pleasant for both cat and owner.
