Aegean

Aegean cats are friendly, sociable, and energetic cats that enjoy being around people. They are intelligent and communicative, known for their expressive vocalizations when interacting with their families. They have a natural affinity for water, a trait developed from generations of living near the sea and catching fish. They are active hunters with a strong prey drive. Social and outgoing, they get along well with children and other animals. They are not overly demanding but appreciate regular interaction and play. Their adaptable, confident nature comes from centuries of coexisting closely with humans in the Greek island communities.

The Aegean is a medium-sized, well-muscled cat with a sturdy, lean build that reflects an active, outdoor lifestyle. The head is a medium-sized, rounded wedge with a slightly broad nose and medium-large ears with rounded tips. Eyes are almond-shaped and come in various shades of green, though blue and amber also occur. The coat is semi-long, dense, and minimal undercoat, adapted to the Mediterranean climate — providing warmth in winter while not being too heavy for warm summers. The paws are medium-sized and rounded. The tail is long and well-furred. Most Aegean cats are bicolor or tricolor, with white being a dominant color.

The Aegean cat is one of the oldest domesticated cat breeds, originating naturally on the Cycladic Islands of Greece. Archaeological evidence suggests cats have lived on the Greek islands for approximately 10,000 years. For centuries, they were valued by fishermen and islanders for their pest-control abilities and friendly nature. Despite their long history, formal recognition as a breed has been slow. Greek cat breeding organizations began developing breed standards in the 1990s. The breed remains most common in Greece and is considered the country's only native domestic cat breed. International recognition is limited, though breed enthusiasts continue to promote the Aegean's unique qualities.

Aegean cats are exceptionally healthy, benefiting from thousands of years of natural selection without selective breeding. They have a broad genetic base and are not known to have any breed-specific genetic disorders. Standard preventive care including annual veterinary checkups, vaccinations, parasite control, and dental care is recommended. Their outdoor heritage means they may be more prone to parasitic infections if allowed outside. Their robust constitution and natural build contribute to their longevity, with many living 15 to 19 years.

The semi-long coat requires moderate grooming — brush once or twice per week to keep it clean and free of tangles. Their active nature requires regular exercise opportunities. Provide climbing structures, interactive toys, and daily play sessions. Many Aegean cats enjoy water, so a pet fountain or supervised water play can be enriching. Feed a high-quality diet, preferably with a fish component that reflects their natural diet. They enjoy outdoor access if it can be provided safely via a secure enclosure or catio. Their social nature means they prefer having company rather than being left alone for long periods.
