California Spangled

California Spangled cats are highly active, intelligent, and social. They have a strong hunting instinct and love to stalk, pounce, and play with great athleticism. They are curious about everything and need mental stimulation to stay happy. Despite their wild look, they are affectionate and devoted to their owners, often choosing to sleep close by. They can be quite vocal and enjoy interactive conversations. Their high energy and intelligence mean they need experienced owners who can provide adequate enrichment and activity. They are not lap cats but prefer to be nearby, observing and participating in household activities.

The California Spangled is a long, lean, muscular cat built for athleticism. Their most distinctive feature is the well-defined spotted coat pattern that mimics wild cats — spots should be round, square, or triangular and well-separated against a lighter background. They have a long, low-slung body with prominent shoulder blades that give them a distinctive rolling, ground-hugging gait reminiscent of a stalking leopard. The head is medium-sized and sculpted with prominent cheekbones, wide-set ears, and almond-shaped eyes. The coat is short, velvety, and close-lying. The tail is dark-tipped and equal to body length.

The California Spangled was created in the 1980s by Hollywood screenwriter Paul Casey, who was inspired by a conversation with anthropologist Louis Leakey about the poaching of wild cats in Africa. Casey spent 11 generations and over a decade selectively breeding various domestic cats — including Abyssinians, British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs, Siamese, and spotted strays from Egypt and Malaysia — to create a domestic cat that resembled an endangered wild spotted cat. The breed was famously launched in the 1986 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog at $1,400 each, generating both sales and controversy. Despite initial fame, the breed never achieved widespread popularity and is now exceedingly rare, with very few active breeders remaining.

Due to the breed's extreme rarity, comprehensive health data is limited. The diverse genetic background used in their creation generally contributes to good overall health. Standard feline health concerns including HCM should be monitored with regular veterinary checkups. Their high activity level means joint health, particularly patellar stability, should be observed. Maintain regular vaccination schedules and parasite prevention. Annual blood work and physical exams help detect any issues early. With proper care, they are expected to live 12 to 16 years.

California Spangled cats need significant physical and mental stimulation. Provide large cat trees, running wheels, and plenty of interactive toys to channel their energy. Daily play sessions of at least 20 to 30 minutes are essential. A secure outdoor enclosure or catio is highly beneficial for this active breed. Their short coat needs minimal grooming — a weekly brush suffices. Feed a high-protein, high-quality diet to support their athletic build. These are not cats for owners who are away frequently; they need interaction and enrichment. Experienced cat owners will find them most rewarding.
