Personality
Features
The Lykoi's most striking feature is their unusual coat — sparse, wiry guard hairs without an undercoat, creating a roan pattern where black and white hairs intermingle. They typically have hairless patches around the eyes, nose, muzzle, and behind the ears, contributing to their werewolf appearance. The amount of coat can change with seasons; some individuals molt almost completely before regrowing. The body is medium-sized, lean, and muscular with a slightly foreign build. The head is a modified wedge with a strong muzzle and large, pointed ears. Eyes are large, round, and typically gold to amber. The tail is shorter than the body and tapers to a point.
History
The Lykoi breed was founded in 2010-2011 when Johnny Gobble, a veterinarian in Tennessee, and his wife Brittney, along with Patti Thomas, began working with natural mutation cats born to feral domestic shorthair colonies. These kittens had sparse, patchy coats that gave them a werewolf-like appearance. Extensive health testing, including dermatological examinations, cardiac testing, and DNA analysis, confirmed the cats were healthy and the coat was caused by a natural recessive gene. The gene causes an incomplete development of hair follicles. TICA granted championship status to the Lykoi in 2017. New foundation cats continue to be found in feral populations worldwide.
Health Notes
Lykoi are generally healthy cats, with the founding breeders conducting extensive health screening before establishing the breed. Their partially hairless skin requires monitoring for sunburn and skin infections. Seasonal coat loss is normal and not a sign of illness. Their exposed skin can be susceptible to environmental irritants. Regular dermatological checks are advisable. They may be more susceptible to upper respiratory infections and should be kept indoors. Standard veterinary care including annual checkups, vaccinations, and dental care is recommended. The breed is still young, so long-term health data is limited.
Care Tips
Lykoi need regular skin care — wipe down exposed skin weekly to remove oil buildup, and bathe as needed. Protect them from direct sun exposure and extreme temperatures. Their thin coat provides minimal insulation, so keep the home warm and provide cozy sleeping spots. Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet to support their active metabolism. Provide plenty of hunting-style toys and interactive play sessions to satisfy their strong prey drive. They are not suited for outdoor living due to their minimal coat protection. Clean their ears regularly and monitor skin for any irritation or infection.
