Nebelung

Nebelungs are gentle, reserved cats that bond profoundly with their owners, often choosing one person as their primary companion. They are shy with strangers and take time to warm up to new people and situations. Once comfortable, they are affectionate, playful, and surprisingly silly. They are creatures of habit that thrive on routine and can become stressed by changes in their environment. They communicate with soft, gentle voices and are not demanding. Intelligent and observant, they watch household activities with quiet interest. They prefer calm environments and may not thrive in chaotic, noisy households. Their loyalty and gentle nature make them wonderful companions for singles and seniors.

The Nebelung is a medium-sized, graceful cat with a long, lithe body and fine bones. Their most distinguishing feature is the medium-length, double-layered blue coat with silver-tipped guard hairs that create a luminous, shimmering appearance. The fur is soft and silky with a dense undercoat, forming a noticeable ruff around the neck and feathering on the tail. The head is a modified wedge with flat planes and a straight profile. Ears are large and pointed with thin, translucent skin. Eyes are large, oval, and a vivid green — yellow in kittens, developing to green by adulthood. The overall impression is one of refined, ethereal beauty.

The Nebelung breed was developed in the 1980s by Cora Cobb of Denver, Colorado. Her cat Elsa, a black domestic shorthair, mated with a male resembling a Russian Blue, producing two blue longhaired kittens named Siegfried (born 1984) and Brunhilde (born 1985). Cobb began a breeding program with these two cats, naming the breed "Nebelung" after the medieval German saga Nibelungenlied. Geneticist Solveig Pflueger helped develop the breed standard, which mirrors the Russian Blue standard but specifies a semi-long coat. TICA accepted the breed in 1987 and granted championship status in 1997. The breed remains rare worldwide.

Nebelungs are generally healthy cats with no widely documented breed-specific genetic diseases. They may be prone to bladder stones, so ensuring adequate water intake is important. Their sensitive, routine-oriented nature means stress can manifest as physical symptoms, so maintaining a stable environment is part of their health management. Obesity can occur if diet is not monitored. Regular veterinary checkups, dental care, and age-appropriate blood work are recommended. Their green eye color should be fully developed by two years; delayed development or changes may warrant veterinary consultation. The breed typically lives 15 to 18 years.

Brush the beautiful double coat two to three times per week to prevent matting and maintain its silvery sheen. The Nebelung thrives on routine — try to maintain consistent feeding times, play schedules, and household patterns. Provide quiet retreats where they can observe household activities from a safe distance. They prefer calm environments and may become stressed in noisy, chaotic homes. Provide fresh water sources, including a pet fountain, to encourage hydration. Gentle, interactive play sessions help build confidence and bond with their owner. Be patient during introductions to new people or situations.
