Peterbalds are exceptionally affectionate and social cats that thrive on human companionship. They follow their owners from room to room and love to be held, often draping themselves across laps or shoulders. Highly intelligent and curious, they can learn tricks and even play fetch. They are vocal cats that enjoy conversing with their families in soft, melodic tones. Their friendly disposition extends to children, other cats, and even dogs, making them excellent household companions. They dislike being left alone for extended periods and do best in homes where someone is frequently present.

Features
The Peterbald has an elegant, elongated body with a wedge-shaped head and large, flared ears set wide apart. Their almond-shaped eyes are expressive and can be any color. The breed displays five distinct coat types: bald (completely hairless), flock (ultra-short, feels like chamois leather), velour (short, wavy coat up to 3mm), brush (wiry, irregular coat), and straight (normal short coat). Their skin feels warm and soft, almost like heated suede. They have long, whip-like tails and oval-shaped paws with prominent, elongated toes that allow them to grasp objects. Their muscular but lean build gives them a refined, aristocratic appearance.
History
The Peterbald was created in 1994 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, when experimental breeder Olga S. Mironova crossed a Don Sphynx male named Afinogen Myth with an Oriental Shorthair female named Radma von Jagerhof. The resulting kittens became the foundation of the breed. The hair-losing gene from the Don Sphynx combined with the elegant body type of the Oriental produced a distinctive new breed. TICA granted the Peterbald championship status in 2005, and the World Cat Federation recognized the breed in 2003. Russian breeders continue to refine the breed toward the Oriental body type while maintaining the unique coat variations.
Health Notes
Peterbalds require special attention to skin care since hairless and semi-hairless varieties are prone to sunburn, skin infections, and temperature sensitivity. Their higher metabolism means they need more calories than fully coated breeds. Regular skin bathing is necessary to prevent oil buildup. Dental health should be monitored closely as the breed can be prone to periodontal disease. Keep them indoors and away from direct sunlight for extended periods. In winter, provide warm clothing or heated beds to prevent hypothermia.
Care Tips
Bathe hairless Peterbalds weekly to remove excess skin oils that would normally be absorbed by fur. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cat shampoo and moisturize with pet-safe lotion if skin becomes dry. Provide extra calories through high-quality, protein-rich food to support their faster metabolism. Keep your home warm, especially in winter, and provide heated cat beds and sunny windowsills. Apply pet-safe sunscreen if they sit near sunny windows. Clean their large ears weekly. Their social nature means they should not be left alone for long periods — consider a companion pet.
