Features

American Bobtails are medium to large cats with a substantial, muscular build and a distinctive naturally short tail ranging from one to four inches. The tail is expressive and mobile, often described as resembling a feather duster in longhaired varieties. The head is a broad modified wedge with prominent brow ridges that give a hunter's gaze. Eyes are large, almost almond-shaped, and slightly angled. Ears are medium with rounded tips and sometimes feature lynx tipping. The coat comes in two lengths — shorthair (resilient, slightly shaggy) and longhair (medium-long, slightly shaggy with minimal undercoat). The body is athletic with a broad chest and powerful hindquarters.

History

The American Bobtail originated in the late 1960s when John and Brenda Sanders found a short-tailed brown tabby kitten at a motel near an Arizona Native American reservation. Named Yodi, this kitten was bred with the couple's Siamese-cross female, producing short-tailed kittens. Early breeding efforts involving inbreeding proved unhealthy, so breeders restarted with a wider gene pool of naturally occurring bobtailed cats found across North America. Mindy Schultz and other dedicated breeders established the modern breed standard focusing on health and the wild appearance. TICA recognized the breed in 1989, and CFA granted full championship status in 2006.

Health Notes

American Bobtails are generally healthy and robust, benefiting from their wide genetic base. Some cats may experience spinal issues related to the tail gene, particularly if the tail is extremely short or absent. Hip dysplasia can occur in this larger breed. Responsible breeders screen for HCM and hip problems. Their hearty appetite can lead to obesity if portions are not managed. Regular veterinary checkups including dental exams are recommended annually. The breed has a typical lifespan of 13 to 18 years. Tailless individuals should be monitored for potential bowel or bladder complications.

Care Tips

Feed a high-protein diet appropriate for their size and activity level, with measured portions to prevent obesity. Shorthaired Bobtails need weekly brushing, while longhaired varieties benefit from two to three grooming sessions per week. Provide plenty of interactive toys, climbing structures, and puzzle feeders to keep their active minds engaged. They enjoy outdoor time in secure enclosures or on leash walks. Their large size requires sturdy cat furniture and appropriately sized litter boxes. Daily play sessions of 15 to 20 minutes help maintain their muscular build and mental well-being.
