Personality
Features
Genettas are small to medium-sized cats with distinctively short legs and a long, slender body that gives them a low-slung, ferret-like profile. Their coat is short and sleek, featuring bold spots or marbled patterns on a warm background color — closely mimicking the African genet's appearance. The head is slightly wedge-shaped with large, alert ears and expressive eyes. The tail is long, often ringed with dark bands like the genet. Despite their short legs, they are muscular and athletic. The overall impression is of a miniature exotic animal.
History
The Genetta was developed by Shannon Kiley of Pawstruk Cattery in the United States, beginning around 2006. The goal was to create a domestic cat that visually resembled the African genet (Genetta genetta), a small carnivore, without using any wild animal genetics. The breed was created by crossing Munchkins, Bengals, and Savannah cats (later-generation domestic individuals). The short legs come from the Munchkin, while the exotic spotted coat derives from Bengal and Savannah lineage. The breed was accepted into TICA's Experimental breed registry. Genettas are still quite rare and are primarily found in North America.
Health Notes
As a short-legged breed, Genettas may be prone to lordosis and pectus excavatum. Joint health should be monitored, particularly as they age. HCM screening from Bengal lineage is advisable with annual echocardiograms. Ensure the breeder has tested parent cats for known genetic conditions. Regular veterinary checkups will help catch any developing issues early. Their active nature means injuries from overly ambitious jumps should be watched for.
Care Tips
Their short, sleek coat is low-maintenance, requiring only weekly brushing. Provide an enriched environment with plenty of toys, tunnels, and climbing opportunities scaled for their short-legged build. Low-entry cat furniture and ramps are helpful. Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet appropriate for active cats. Interactive play sessions of at least 15-20 minutes daily will channel their boundless energy. Secure your home carefully, as their curiosity and agility can get them into tight spaces.
