Khao Manee

Khao Manees are outgoing, intelligent, and remarkably people-oriented cats. They are active and playful, enjoying interactive games and exploration. They are vocal communicators, using a variety of meows, chirps, and trills to express themselves. They bond intensely with their owners and thrive on attention, often following their favorite person around the house. They are social with visitors and generally get along with other cats, though they may prefer being the center of attention. Their intelligence makes them quick learners who can master tricks and enjoy puzzle toys. They do not tolerate being ignored or left alone for long periods.

The Khao Manee is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a lithe, athletic build. The coat is short, smooth, close-lying, and always pure white. The head is a heart-shaped wedge with high cheekbones and a gently curved profile. The most prized feature is the eyes — large, slightly oval, and brilliantly colored. Eye colors include blue, gold, green, and the highly coveted odd-eyed combination (one blue and one gold or green). Ears are medium to large and slightly forward-tilting. The body is semi-foreign in type with moderate muscle tone and elegant proportions. The tail is medium in length and tapers to a rounded tip.

The Khao Manee is one of Thailand's oldest and most revered cat breeds, mentioned in the Tamra Maew (Cat Book Poems), a manuscript dating to the 14th century Ayutthaya Kingdom. For centuries, they were kept exclusively by Thai royalty and were considered symbols of good fortune. King Rama V (1868-1910) was particularly devoted to the breed and reportedly hid them when foreign diplomats visited Thailand, offering Siamese cats instead. The breed remained virtually unknown outside Thailand until 1999, when American breeder Colleen Freymuth imported the first Khao Manees to the United States. TICA granted the breed championship status in 2015.

As with all white cats, Khao Manees can be prone to congenital deafness, particularly in blue-eyed individuals. Hearing should be tested in kittens using BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) testing. Their white coat and pink skin make them susceptible to sunburn and potentially skin cancer, so they should be kept indoors and away from prolonged direct sun exposure. Reputable breeders test for deafness and select for hearing parents. Otherwise, the breed is generally healthy with a typical lifespan of 12 to 18 years. Regular veterinary checkups and dental care are recommended.

The short, smooth coat requires minimal grooming — weekly brushing keeps it clean and shiny. Protect their sensitive pink skin from sun exposure by limiting access to sunny windows or applying pet-safe sunscreen. If they have hearing impairment, use visual cues and vibrations for communication and keep them safely indoors. Feed a high-quality diet with appropriate portions. Provide plenty of interactive toys and daily play sessions to satisfy their active, intelligent nature. Their social personality means they need regular human interaction and may benefit from a companion cat.
