Van Cats are energetic, intelligent, and highly independent. They are known for their remarkable love of water and may voluntarily play in puddles, bathtubs, or even swim. They bond strongly with their family but on their own terms — they prefer to be near their owners rather than on their laps. They are athletic cats that love to climb and perch in high places. Their playful nature persists well into adulthood. They can be strong-willed and assertive, which may challenge first-time cat owners. They are social with their family but may be reserved with strangers.

Personality
Features
Van Cats are large, muscular cats with a long, sturdy body and broad chest. In Turkey, the prized variety is entirely white with no markings, though the internationally known Turkish Van has the classic "Van pattern" — a white body with color restricted to the head and tail. They often have odd eyes (heterochromia), with one blue and one amber eye. The semi-long coat is cashmere-like in texture, water-resistant, and lacks an undercoat. They have a broad, wedge-shaped head, large ears, and an overall powerful, athletic appearance. Males can weigh up to 9 kg.
History
Van Cats have inhabited the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey for thousands of years and are deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of the area. Local legends associate them with Noah's Ark, which is said to have landed on nearby Mount Ararat. The breed was brought to Western attention in 1955 when British photographers Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday brought a pair back to England. The breed was recognized by GCCF in 1969. In Turkey, Van Cats are protected and bred at the Van Cat Research Center, affiliated with Yüzüncü Yıl University. The pure white, odd-eyed variety is especially prized and is considered a symbol of Turkish national identity.
Health Notes
White Van Cats with blue eyes have an increased risk of congenital deafness, and odd-eyed cats may be deaf on the blue-eyed side. BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) testing can detect deafness in kittens. As a large breed, they may be susceptible to HCM and hip dysplasia. Annual cardiac screening and joint health monitoring are recommended. Their love of water means they may ingest water from various sources — ensure all accessible water is clean and safe.
Care Tips
Their semi-long, single-layer coat is surprisingly easy to maintain — weekly combing is usually sufficient as it rarely mats. Provide plenty of vertical space and sturdy cat trees, as they love to climb. If possible, offer supervised access to shallow water for play. They need ample space to run and exercise their athletic bodies. A large, secure outdoor enclosure is ideal. Feed a high-protein diet appropriate for their large, muscular build. Provide multiple water sources, which they will enjoy and helps maintain hydration.
