Donskoy

"A warm-hearted, wrinkly charmer from the Don River"

NyankoDB Editor's Pick

The Donskoy, also known as the Don Sphynx, is a Russian hairless breed distinguished from the Canadian Sphynx by a dominant rather than recessive hairlessness gene. With their wrinkled skin, large ears, and almond-shaped eyes, they have an alien-like elegance. Beneath their unusual exterior lies an extraordinarily affectionate, intelligent, and social personality that wins over everyone they meet.

Personality

Donskoys are exceptionally friendly, affectionate, and social cats that crave human company. They are often described as dog-like in their loyalty, following their owners everywhere and wanting to be involved in all activities. Highly intelligent and curious, they can learn tricks, come when called, and solve puzzle toys. They are warm and gentle with children and get along well with other pets, including dogs. Their social nature means they do not tolerate being left alone for long periods and thrive in homes with constant companionship. They are playful and energetic, retaining kitten-like enthusiasm throughout their lives.

Features

The Donskoy is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a distinctive wrinkled appearance. Like the Peterbald, they display multiple coat types: rubber bald (born and remaining completely hairless with elastic, warm skin), flock (born with a chamois-like coat that may disappear), velour (soft, wavy coat that often becomes bald on the head), and brush (wiry, often partial coat). The body is strong and medium-boned with a broad chest and long, webbed toes. The head is wedge-shaped with prominent cheekbones, large ears set high, and almond-shaped eyes that can be any color. The skin is elastic with pronounced wrinkling, particularly on the head, neck, and belly.

History

The Donskoy breed began in 1987 when Elena Kovaleva, a professor in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, rescued a kitten that local boys were mistreating. She named the kitten Varvara, and as it grew, it began losing the hair on its back. Veterinary treatments failed to restore the coat. When Varvara had kittens, some were born hairless and others lost their hair over time. Breeder Irina Nemikina recognized the potential and began a breeding program in 1989. The hairlessness was found to be caused by a dominant gene, unlike the Sphynx's recessive gene. WCF recognized the breed in 1997, TICA granted championship status in 2005, and the Donskoy later contributed its gene to create the Peterbald breed.

Health Notes

Donskoys require attentive skin care due to their lack of protective fur. They are susceptible to sunburn, skin infections, and temperature extremes. Their higher metabolism requires increased caloric intake. Dental health needs regular attention as the breed can be prone to tooth decay and gum disease. Some individuals may experience ectodermal dysplasia-related issues. Their lack of eyelashes can make eyes vulnerable to debris and irritation. Keep them strictly indoors and provide warm sleeping areas. Regular veterinary checkups should include skin examination and dental assessment.

Care Tips

Bathe hairless Donskoys weekly to remove oil buildup on the skin. Use a gentle, pH-balanced pet shampoo and follow with a pet-safe moisturizer if needed. Provide extra food portions — hairless cats have a higher metabolism and need more calories to maintain body temperature. Keep the home warm (minimum 68°F/20°C) and provide heated beds and blankets. Apply pet-safe sunscreen near sunny windows. Clean their large ears and skin folds weekly. Protect them from temperature extremes — they need sweaters in winter and sun protection in summer. Regular dental care is essential.
