Oregon Rex

Oregon Rexes were known for their gentle, affectionate temperament and love of human companionship. They were sociable cats that enjoyed being part of family activities and got along well with children and other pets. Playful yet not hyperactive, they had a calm demeanor that made them easy to live with. They were moderately vocal and enjoyed interactive games with their owners. Their trusting and adaptable nature made them suitable for a wide range of households.

Oregon Rexes were medium-sized cats with a slender, muscular build. Their defining feature was a soft, wavy coat that lacked guard hairs, giving it a plush, velvety texture similar to the Cornish Rex. The curls were tighter than those of the Devon Rex. They had a wedge-shaped head with large ears and prominent cheekbones. Their eyes were medium to large and slightly oval. The body was lithe and graceful with long, slim legs.

The Oregon Rex appeared in 1955 when a curly-coated kitten was born to a domestic cat in Oregon, USA. The mutation was initially thought to be unique, but subsequent breeding tests revealed it was allelic to (genetically the same as) the Cornish Rex mutation. Breeders in the Pacific Northwest worked to establish the breed through the 1960s and 1970s. However, because the gene was found to be identical to that of the Cornish Rex, the two breeds were eventually merged. The last known purebred Oregon Rex died in 1972, and the breed is considered extinct as a separate entity, though its genetics persist within the Cornish Rex population.

Oregon Rexes, like other Rex breeds, had delicate skin that was prone to dryness and irritation due to the lack of protective guard hairs. They were sensitive to temperature extremes and could become chilled easily. Regular dental checkups were recommended as Rex breeds can be prone to periodontal issues. Their thin coat also meant they were more susceptible to sunburn on exposed areas.

Their fine, wavy coat required gentle grooming with a soft brush to avoid damaging the delicate curls. Bathing was occasionally needed to manage skin oils. Indoor living was essential to protect them from temperature extremes and sunburn. Warm bedding and a draft-free environment were important for their comfort. Regular playtime kept them mentally and physically stimulated.
