Personality

Ural Rexes are gentle, affectionate, and wonderfully calm cats. They form strong bonds with all family members and are known for their patience with children and other animals. They enjoy being held and will happily settle into their owner's lap for extended cuddle sessions. Despite their mellow nature, they are playful and enjoy interactive games. They are not overly vocal and express themselves with soft purrs and chirps. Their adaptable, easygoing temperament makes them ideal for households seeking a low-stress, loving companion.

Features

Ural Rexes are medium-sized cats with a muscular, well-proportioned body. Their defining feature is their curly coat, which forms loose, elastic waves rather than tight ringlets. The texture is soft, dense, and plush, with a silky feel. Both shorthair and semi-longhair varieties exist. The head is a broad, short wedge with rounded contours, wide-set ears, and large, oval eyes. The overall expression is open and friendly. Unlike some Rex breeds, the Ural Rex has a full coat without bald patches.

History

The Ural Rex was first documented in the city of Zarechny, Sverdlovsk Oblast, in the Ural Mountains of Russia during the 1940s. The curly-coated cats were a natural occurrence in the region. A formal breeding program began in 1988 using a curly-coated male named Vasily born in Zarechny. Genetic testing confirmed that the Ural Rex curl mutation is independent from the Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, and Selkirk Rex genes, making it a genuinely distinct breed. The World Cat Federation (WCF) recognized the breed in 2006. They remain rare outside of Russia and Germany, where the most active breeding programs exist.

Health Notes

Ural Rexes are generally healthy cats with a robust constitution thanks to their natural origins. Their curly coat may be associated with occasional skin dryness or sensitivity. Regular dental checkups are recommended, as with all breeds. Heart murmurs should be evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out underlying cardiac conditions. Annual wellness exams are recommended, with senior cats benefiting from biannual visits.

Care Tips

Their curly coat requires gentle handling — use a soft brush or your hands to smooth the waves without disrupting the curl pattern. Bathing is rarely needed unless the coat becomes oily. Avoid over-brushing, as this can flatten the curls. Provide a balanced diet to support coat health and overall well-being. Interactive play sessions and puzzle toys will keep them mentally stimulated. They appreciate a warm, stable home environment and do well with a consistent daily routine.
