Personality

Arabian Maus are loyal, territorial, and highly active cats. They bond closely with their families and are affectionate at home, but they maintain a strong independent streak. They are excellent hunters with keen instincts and high energy levels. They are intelligent and alert, always aware of their surroundings. While devoted to their owners, they can be reserved with strangers. They are territorial and may not easily accept new cats in their space. Their high activity level and strong personality require experienced owners who understand and respect their nature. They thrive with plenty of space to explore and exercise.

Features

The Arabian Mau is a medium to large, muscular cat with a firm, athletic build. The head is slightly rounded with a well-defined whisker pinch and a strong chin. The profile shows a slight concave curve. Ears are large, set slightly to the side, and pointed. Eyes are slightly oval, large, and come in any color that matches the coat. The coat is short, close-lying, and firm without an undercoat — an adaptation to the desert climate. The body is strong and muscular with long legs; the hind legs are slightly longer than the front. The paws are oval. The tail is medium in length and tapers to a point. Their overall build suggests athleticism and endurance.

History

The Arabian Mau is a natural breed originating from the desert cats that have roamed the Arabian Peninsula for over 1,000 years. These cats adapted to the extreme climate, living in cities and deserts alongside human populations. For much of their history, they were considered common street cats and were not valued as a breed. Petra Muller, president of the Middle East Cat Society (MECATS), began a selective breeding program in 2004 using cats from the streets of the United Arab Emirates. She worked to document and preserve their natural characteristics. WCF provisionally recognized the Arabian Mau in 2008 and granted full recognition in 2009. The breed remains most common in the Middle East.

Health Notes

Arabian Maus are exceptionally healthy cats, having been shaped by natural selection in a harsh desert environment for over a millennium. They have no known breed-specific genetic conditions. Their lack of undercoat, while an adaptation to heat, means they can be uncomfortable in cold climates. Standard preventive veterinary care including annual checkups, vaccinations, dental care, and parasite prevention is recommended. Their robust constitution and diverse gene pool contribute to good overall health. With proper care, they typically live 12 to 16 years.

Care Tips

The short, close-lying coat requires minimal grooming — occasional brushing keeps it in good condition. Provide ample space and enrichment for their high energy level. Tall cat trees, running wheels, and interactive toys help channel their energy indoors. If outdoor access can be provided safely, they will enjoy it. Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet to support their muscular build. They are heat-tolerant but may need extra warmth in cold climates, as they lack an undercoat. Their territorial nature means careful, gradual introductions are important when adding new pets. Daily interactive play sessions help maintain their bond with their owner.
